The district council spent more than $165,000 on severance payments to employees over the last year.

Three separate payments were made between June this year and last totalling $132,635, $25,208 and $7875. The district council also incurred $32,000 in legal fees dealing with the matters.

Chief executive David Ward said the mediated severance payments relate to employment relations processes conducted with three individuals.

He said they are unable to provide any information relating to the payments because of this.

“Council is legally bound by its obligations under the Privacy Act 1993 and the Employment Relations Act 2000 not to reveal any severance information that would identify any individual or make public their personal and private employment matters,” he said.

The district council made no severance payments in the previous year.

The information was released in the district council’s Annual Report that summarises its performance and activities over the last year.

The Local Government Act 2002 requires the district council to disclose any staff severance payments to the public.
