Allison ‘humbled’ by recognition on world stage

Joe Allison took his one shot for glory.

The young Dunedin photographer won an award at the "Oscars of sports photography" in Qatar at the weekend.

Allison won the junior photographer category at the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) awards.

"To do something you love is a privilege — to be recognised for it on the world stage is an honour," he told the Otago Daily Times from Doha yesterday.

"I am extremely humbled to be acknowledged among such great talent. This award is something special.

"Being a finalist already exceeded my expectations, but winning this award is something I could have only ever dreamed about."

Allison, who travelled with broadcaster father Paul, said a trip that ended up taking 36 hours had been well worth it.

"The experience alone has been life-changing."

His entry, labelled "eyes on the ball", was a bird’s-eye photograph from a netball game between the Southern Steel and the Central Pulse at Stadium Southland last year.

The prize is a scholarship to attend a major sporting event.

What the event would be had not yet been advised, he said.

He has stayed on in Doha for a couple of days to cover Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

He was working for Getty Images at the dramatic penalty shootout in which Australia defeated Peru yesterday, and is sideline for the All Whites’ crunch game against Costa Rica this morning.
