Do not tell Allan Swallow that bowls is a struggling sport.

Swallow, the Outram Bowling Club president, is buoyant as he prepares for his club to host a tournament experiencing rapid growth.

Outram is holding its second "Super Singles" tournament in conjunction with the Taieri club over the next week.

Section play is on Sunday, and playoffs are next Thursday, Waitangi Day.

Fields are full with 32 men and 32 women from as far afield as Invercargill and representing most of the Dunedin clubs.

"It’s really taken off," Swallow said.

"We’ve also got a long waiting list, so we might have to expand to three greens next year."

All bowlers get four games on Sunday, after which the top 16 men and top 16 women will progress to the playoffs, which will have a straight knockout format.

The tournament is aimed at what used to be called "junior" players, though "development" is now arguably the better term.

Male bowlers must have less than five years’ experience, and the term is eight years for the women.

"There’s not a lot happening for people just starting the game," Swallow said.
