Winners’ entry 'hard to fault'

Central Southland deer farmers Dave Lawrence and Donna Day were named the supreme winners of the 2022 Elk & Wapiti Society of New Zealand velvet and hard antler competition in Oamaru on Friday.

Society president Grant Hasse, of Rolleston, said the couple won by entering a 27.5kg head from the wapiti Nepia, which they bred on their Tikana Wapiti Stud in Browns.

"It’s the heaviest head grown and entered in a competition in New Zealand — it’s a beautiful head and hard to fault."

5-year-old: Tombstone (Clachanburn) 1, Niwa (Littlebourne) 2, 3/16 (Raincliff) 3.
6-year-old: Yotam (Tikana) 1, Bender (Clachanburn) 2.
