Glenn Cunninghame (left) and Gareth Dykes were two of many people who dressed festively for Invercargill’s Christmas in the Park in Queens Park from noon yesterday.

Aromas of tasty morsels from an array of food carts wafted across the crowd gathered around the band rotunda.

Bands, choirs and experienced Southland performers entertained the crowd.

Parents relaxed while children entertained themselves on the bouncy castle or giant-size board games and waited patiently for the big fella himself later in the afternoon.

The crowd, armed with warm jackets, hats and blankets to take care of the cool afternoon that reached 14degC, did not allow its enthusiasm to be dampened by the cool but dry weather.

The event was one of two family Christmas events in Invercargill yesterday.

Parents were able to enjoy the last Sunday before Christmas indoors at the Merry Little Christmas Concert hosted at the ILT Stadium. Children were treated to a two-hour show of sing-alongs, dance and drama.
