Squadron 26 (Oamaru) Air Cadets unit commander Derek Beveridge said Poppy Day was an important opportunity to remember those who lost their lives.
"It allows people to remember," he said.
"Remember the horrors of war and hope we don’t have to repeat it in the future."
Waitaki RSA welfare trustee Warren Prescott said Poppy Day was a good time to think about the people who served in the war.
"Its a lovely time for everyone to reflect," he said.
In previous years, it had raised more than $8000 and was expected to do the same this year, Mr Prescott said.
The money collected goes to the RSA welfare fund for ex-service personnel.
The money collected in Oamaru was used locally, to benefit the welfare of the district, Mr Prescott said.
About 50 volunteers from the Air Training Corps, service groups and ex-service personnel will be selling poppies from 9am today.
Volunteers will be stationed at Lagonda Tearooms, Brydone Hotel, Countdown and both New World supermarkets.
Air Training Corps cadets Marieke Badenhorst and Tiana Munn said they were looking forward to Poppy Day and paying their respects.
"It’s a way to remember those who have served, and meet the community," Marieke said.
"It’s a good way to pay respect," Tiana said.
Mr Prescott was thankful for the support of the Air Training Corps cadets.
"We’re very grateful for the youth of today, who take the time to understand the meaning."
