Easter liquor licence bid fails

An application for exemption to the Easter liquor rules for a special event in Hawea on Good Friday was yesterday declined by the Queenstown Lakes District Council acting as the District Licensing Agency.

Bashan Holdings Ltd, which owns the Lake Hawea Motor Inn, had applied for a special licence under the Sale of Liquor Act to be allowed to trade on Friday from 6.30pm until midnight for a ticketed music event.

Bashan Holdings managing director John Shea told the hearing he wanted to showcase a group of young local talent.

But Cr John Mann told the Otago Daily Times the application had been declined because it contained insufficient information to warrant the approval of a special licence.

Mr Shea said he had not decided whether it would be worthwhile for the hotel to appeal.
