Problems with Telecom mobiles again

Some mobile phone users have again struck problems with their Telecom service.

Customers on the company's new XT network and the older CDMA network in some areas have had "intermittent'' issues with calling, text messages and mobile internet for about three hours from 8am today.

Spokeswoman Katherine Murphy said the problem affected phones nationwide switching between cell sites.

It was impossible to say how many people were affected but engineers were able to fix the problem "pretty quickly", she said.

The failure did not affect emergency 111 services and was not related to problems Telecom has encountered with its XT network, she said.

The XT network was launched last May, experienced four separate faults between December last year and February this year, disrupting service to customers south of Taupo for periods from hours to three days.

Telecom put its XT contractor Alcatel-Lucent on notice and forked out $10 million in compensation after the fourth network failure.
