The chance to buy their text books at bargain prices had students flocking to the annual SCM Otago Book Exchange yesterday.

Now in its 80th year, the exchange allows students to have their old books sold on their behalf, with some of the proceeds going to charity.

Manager Claire Wilson said the sale was popular every year with all students but especially those studying health science, as their books tended to be very expensive.

Students put a price on their books when they dropped them off, which was at least 25% below retail value, and 12.5% of the sale went to administration costs and this year's charity, Youthline.

Student Jess Voysey thought the book sale was a great idea and was "very happy" with her purchases.

The sale runs in the All Saints Church Hall until March 5.

Books will be collected at the hall for sale until March 3.
