OUSA initiative providing support

Keeping their constituents safe and happy has meant some long days for Otago University Students Association executive members, but it has all been worth it.

The Are You OK? initiative resulted in up to eight members attending Ori10 evening events to help students who were intoxicated, unwell or just needed some time out.

President Harriet Geoghegan said the team had been working well and events had been "pretty cruisy".

"Most people are having a fun time.

We are just keeping the fun going."

Dressed in bright green tops they were hard to miss and, teamed with the Otago Combined Christian Group (OCCG) and Red Frogs, ensured all students at events were having a good time.

Red Frogs was a church-based volunteer organisation which handed out water, ice-blocks, doughnuts and candyfloss to eager students to help keep their fluid and energy levels up.

The OCCG ran a 24-hour tent which provided food and a place to chill out for students.

Ms Geoghegan said any students in events who wanted to be taken to the tent could be escorted by the Are You OK? team, or driven home in the OUSA van.

"It's been really fun for the exec to get out there and meet people and make sure things are going smoothly."

She was pleased with how students had behaved at events, as the level of intoxication was low among the majority.

Colleges had taken the time to talk with their residents and altered meal times to suit some events.
