Quake shakes lower South Island

An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale rocked Fiordland, Southland and Otago late this afternoon.

The 5.38pm quake, centred off the coast of Fiordland,170km west of Invercargill, at a depth of 12km, would have been felt in Fiordland, Southland and Otago, the GeoNet website reported.

No damage was expected.
