It was cool to korero at the inaugural Taieri hui ako yesterday, when groups from five Taieri schools performed before a packed audience in the Silverstream School Hall.

The hui was a chance for groups from the Taieri to celebrate and share aspects of Maori culture, Silverstream School acting principal Linda Wallis said.

"Since our school first merged, we have had a kapa haka group and it has grown from strength to strength every year," Mrs Wallis said.

With an increasing number of pupils joining kapa haka groups in the area, it was decided to hold the hui.

Groups from St Marys, East Taieri, Elmgrove School, Taieri College and host school Silverstream performed items such as waiata and haka to the delight of children, teachers and parents.

Maori resource teacher Lauana Thomas said the hui was a chance for children to perform what they have studied and "it is an opportunity to show their parents what they have been doing".

More than 200 children and parents took part in the morning activities, which began with a haka powhiri, and ended with a karakia.

"It has been such a success we would like to do this every year," Mrs Wallis said.
