Stadium funding passes $30 million

Private sector funding for the Forsyth Barr Stadium has passed $30 million, with sponsorship packages and seating sales pushing funding to two-thirds of the total required.

Carisbrook Stadium Trust commercial manager Guy Hedderwick said yesterday more naming rights' sponsorship had been sold, although the companies involved were not expected to announce them until closer to the opening date of the project.

The trust is required to raise $45.5 million in private sector funding, something the organisation is doing by selling seating packages and sponsorship.

Mr Hedderwick said $30.3 million was needed for capital funding, and the rest for operational funding.

Yesterday, he said the total stood at $30.1 million, up from $28.8 million last October.

The total included the naming rights sponsorship bought by Forsyth Barr early last year for an undisclosed sum.

Mr Hedderwick said the sponsorship sold more recently was for the naming rights for one of the stands, and smaller contracts for supply agreements.

Sales were "tracking steadily", and the trust was slightly ahead of where it expected to be.

Asked who was buying the seating packages, he said the corporate suites were being taken both by "big business", and groups of small to medium businesses that had got together to share the cost.

Open club reserves, which included a screened block of eight to 12 seats in the stadium's south stand, with food and beverage service, were selling "really well".

On average, every buyer was taking just over three seats, Mr Hedderwick said.
