He was Karauria Watene, aged 65.
The accident happened at Te Hauke at 8.45am and involved a relatively small tractor with a front-end loader, police said.
Senior Sergeant Greg Brown said both lanes of the highway were closed for about an hour.
Inquiries into the cause of the accident were continuing.
