One man got the jump on the Valentine's Day marriage proposals in Queenstown yesterday, asking his partner of four years to marry him by landing on a sign after a 15,000-foot tandem skydive with NZone.

Ray Adcock (51) and Debbie Simmonds (48) are both originally from the United Kingdom, but live in Abu Dhabi and celebrated four years together on February 2.

After meeting while watching football in a pub in Norfolk, the couple were "smitten" and took up running together, before relocating to Abu Dhabi where Mr Adcock is a Government adviser to policing.

He had been secretly planning the special proposal with NZone since August last year, when the couple decided to include a skydive in their New Zealand trip.

He contacted a company in Abu Dhabi and arranged for a printed canvas which read "Debbie, will you marry me? Ray".

Mr Adcock said he had been corresponding with NZone for "months" and it all fell into place yesterday, when the couple landed on the sign and Mr Adcock got down on bended knee.

Ms Simmonds said the experience was "astonishing".

For the company, it was a perfect start to 2010, which marks 20 years since it began operating as New Zealand's first commercial tandem skydiving business.

Business development manager Derek Melnick said NZone would be actively developing its facilities and raising its profile, with "significant investments" into all elements of its infrastructure.
