Prison van crashes on Queen Street - two injured

A prisoner and a guard were taken to hospital after a van crashed while transporting five prisoners from Auckland District Court to the central remand prison yesterday.

The Department of Corrections said the van, operated by First Security, crashed on Queen Street about 3.45pm.

"At this stage we cannot confirm the cause of the accident, which will be determined by police," Corrections assistant regional manager Grace Smit said.

She said the prisoners were wearing waist restraints and were removed from the van with the help of police who ensured there was no risk to public safety.

"One prisoner and one First Security staff member required further medical treatment and were taken to hospital while the remaining four prisoners were taken to the prison in another vehicle. They were reassessed by prison medical staff on arrival and none of them needed hospital treatment."
