Spectacular juggling acts, acrobatic, magicians and clowns are features of the Zirka Circus, which stops in Queenstown this week.
A brand new circus is visiting Queenstown this week as part of its first nationwide tour.

But do not expect any animals rights protests as seen at last year's circus - this circus is animal free.

Zirka Circus focuses on acrobats, magicians, jugglers and clowns, with a troupe of 30 international artists, mainly from China and Russia.

"I know animals are considered a traditional part of circus performances in many parts of the world, but we have decided on a different approach, with a very modern and spectacular show.

"You will not see any animals, but instead a lot of very talented magicians, funny clowns and amazing acrobats," Zirka Circus owner and manager Jeni Hou said.

Ms Hou is a third-generation circus professional.

She was born in China, but immigrated to New Zealand 10 years ago.

Zirka Circus has performances at the sports ground outside the Queenstown Primary School at 7.30pm, from today until Saturday, plus 2pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Ticket prices range from $25 to $30 for adults and $18 to $25 for children. Bookings on 0800 294-752.
