If North Otago dominated the first day of the Hawke Cup elimination match played at Oamaru over the weekend, South Canterbury took the honours on the second day.
Sent into bat by the visitors on Saturday, North Otago's Sean Eathorne dominated with a fine innings of 121, after Ben Cant (44) and captain Chris Smith (23) compiled an opening partnership of 63.
Craig Hinton and Kevin Teahen took three wickets each for South Canterbury.
Chasing North Otago's total of 344, South Canterbury was 86 for four at stumps on the first day, with the other five wickets falling for the addition of only 31 runs, with Dan Laming retiring hurt.
For North Otago, Cant took six for 30 off 17 overs, supported by David Sewell, who took three for 40.
Forced to follow on, South Canterbury batted through to 6.30pm yesterday when the captains agreed that no result could be achieved, with South Canterbury on 358 for eight wickets.
For North Otago, Sewell, Cant and left arm offspinner Jordan Horrell took two wickets each.
Australia won the under-19 World Cup on Saturday, beating Pakistan by 25 runs in the final in Christchurch.
Batting first, Australia posted 207 for nine.
It proved to be too many for Pakistan as paceman Josh Hazlewood (four for 30) and Australia's spinners took control to dismiss it for 182 with 3.2 overs to spare.
It was Australia's third title, having won it at home in 1987-88 and in New Zealand in 2001-02. - NZPA
