Tree-planting delayed

Tree-planting in the Linger and Die reserve at Alexandra has been delayed in the dry weather to boost the trees' chances of survival.

Contact Energy environmental adviser Daniel Druce told the Clutha Management Committee yesterday landscaping the area had been postponed until autumn.

Representatives from the Central Otago District Council, Land Information New Zealand and Keep Alexandra and Clyde Beautiful group met this week to discuss the plans for the site.

"Contact was going to plant the trees in there in October or November. However, with those northwest winds, we decided to postpone planting to improve the survival rates," Mr Druce said.

About 100 trees - oaks, other specimen trees and native species - would be planted in March or April.

A irrigation system would be installed as well.
