Brown bids for rare treble

It will hardly delight the home fans if it happens but Australian golfer Mitchell Brown could join an exclusive club at The Hills this week.

If Brown can win the $830,000 New Zealand Open, he will complete a treble of victories on this side of the Tasman.

Before winning the New Zealand PGA in a playoff at Clearwater on Sunday, the New South Welshman won the New Zealand Amateur in Palmerston North in 2005.

The only other golfer to have his name inscribed on all three of New Zealand golf's major trophies is another Australian, Peter O'Malley.

O'Malley won the New Zealand Amateur at the Hutt Golf Club in 1986, the New Zealand Open at the Grange in 1995 and the PGA at Clearwater five years ago.

O'Malley is also in the Open field at The Hills, bidding to become the first two-time Australian winner of the tournament since Rodger Davis (1986, 1991).
