Driver charged after chase

A short but high-speed car chase in Dunedin, in which a motorist allegedly fled from a police patrol car at speeds of up to 137kmh in Mosgiel, ended when the pursued car turned into a dead-end street, police say.

The car raced down Dukes Rd, before turning into Hazlett Rd and then the dead-end Grant Dalton St about 12.30am on Saturday, Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross, of Dunedin, said.

The 26-year-old driver was apprehended by police while trying to flee, Snr Sgt Ross said.

The man would appear in the Dunedin District Court charged with reckless driving, failing to stop and drink-driving, after allegedly recording a breath-alcohol level of 728mcg.

A 19-year-old motorcyclist was taken to Dunedin Hospital with facial and leg injuries after crashing his motorbike which failed to take a bend in Musselburgh at the weekend.

The man was allegedly travelling about 80kmh when he lost control, mounting the kerb and hitting a fence, Snr Sgt Ross said.

Police were awaiting the results of a blood sample to determine if the motorcyclist was intoxicated, he said.

Police are hunting for a missing helicopter - last seen parked in the bedroom of a Dunedin home.

The remote-controlled helicopter was taken from the Northumberland St home about 5.45am on Sunday, Snr Sgt Ross said.

It appeared two young men entered the house through a back door while the occupants slept, Snr Sgt Ross said.

The occupants were wakened and one gave chase, but lost sight of the offenders in nearby Paris St, he said.

The pair were described as aged about 18, one, with short hair, of slim build and wearing a black and red top, while the other was wearing a two-tone hooded top, he said.
