A man in his 50s has been flown to Dunedin Hospital with hypothermia after he and three friends were thrown from their boat when it overturned at Taieri Mouth this morning.
Police were called at 9.15am and sent a Search and Rescue helicopter to the scene after rough conditions prevented rescue boats being involved.
One of the men on the boat managed to swim to shore but the other three were swept out to sea.
The man flown to hospital had been in the cold water for more than half an hour and could barely stand when airlifted to the beach north of Taieri Mouth. The other three received medical check-ups at the scene but were not transported to the hospital.
