Recently filed accounts for the Chris Cairns Foundation revealed it ended the year to March 31 $94,402 in the red after spending $210,892 on an income of $116,490, The Press reported.
The foundation, which promotes safe driving at level crossings, received $50,000 sponsorship from KiwiRail and collected $64,895 in donations.
Cairns' sister died in a truck-train crash in 1993 and he set up the foundation in 2006.
Since then, it has raised about $600,000 to promote rail safety. He is not paid by the foundation but is reimbursed for travel and accommodation expenses.
Foundation manager Megan Drayton said the foundation remained in good health and had secured KiwiRail sponsorship of $100,000 a year for the next three years.
"We're not in any trouble whatsoever."
KiwiRail spokesman Kevin Ramshaw said the accounts had been studied by KiwiRail and the company was happy "with the way it's being run".
Cairns lives in Dubai. He returns to New Zealand each year for Railway Safety Awareness Week in March.
