Police seek help from Spain over tourists' deaths

Spanish police have been asked for help after two tourists died when their campervan and a truck collided in Northland yesterday.

The two, a man and a woman both believed to be 35, were pronounced dead at the scene and police believe they probably died instantly in the head-on collision with the truck near Towai, south of Kawakawa.

Spanish police were asked to help in telling relatives of the tragedy.

Paihia police Sergeant Peter Marshall said the cause of the accident was still being investigated.

Mr Marshall would not comment on the possibility of charges.

"The truck has impacted head on into the campervan. During that impact the trailer of the truck has jack knifed and collided with a Mazda ute preparing to take evasive action."

Mr Marshall said police were still waiting to hear from Spanish police about the two victims.

"It's a sad situation."

The driver of the truck was unhurt and a woman and child in the third vehicle received moderate injuries.
