Pakistan were 53 for three at lunch on the fifth day of the first cricket test against New Zealand today, 198 runs short of victory at Dunedin's University Oval.

Set 251 for victory after New Zealand were dismissed in their second innings for 153 early in the opening session, Pakistan slumped to 24 for three before captain Mohammad Yousuf, with 26 not out, and Umar Akmal, 15 not out, steadied the chase.

Shane Bond, with two for 11, and Chris Martin, one for 24, were the successful bowlers.

At the start of their runchase Pakistan had a maximum of 91 overs to reach the target, a run rate of 2.75.
