Normal weather should be restored

A moderate El Nino weather pattern means conditions for the start of summer should be about normal for Otago, consigning to history one of the coolest Octobers on record.

The Otago Regional Council's climate and pasture update forecasts normal to below normal average air temperatures and normal rainfall from November through until January.

River flows and soil temperatures were also forecast to be normal or below normal in East and North Otago, but normal everywhere else.

The report said last month was the coldest October for 64 years, with Otago temperatures on average 1degC colder than average.

Oamaru, Dunedin airport, Musselburgh and Balclutha temperatures were 2degC colder, while Queenstown and Dunedin recorded their lowest average minimum temperature on record.

In the case of Queenstown, that record dates to 1871.

Soil in inland parts of North Otago and Central Otago at the end of October was drier than the long-term average, while parts of the Clutha basin were also drier than normal.

The report said even if November's rainfall was normal, those areas would still be drier than normal but not as dry as at this time last year.

The El Nino weather pattern was expected to persist until the end of January but could last until March.
