Intending onlookers are being advised to stay away from the scene of a large fire in an industrial area of Auckland.

More than 80 firefighters and 18 fire appliances from all parts of Auckland have made their way to the commercial building fire at Corporate Consumables in Fisher Crescent, Mt Wellington, about 1km southeast of Sylvia Park shopping mall.

Fire Service northern communications centre shift manager Jaron Phillips said the fire had not yet been brought under control.

Aerial appliances were setting up at the rear of the building.

Mr Phillips said the fire was believed to have started in the front office. He advised people to stay away from the area.

A photographer at the scene said there was no sign of flames but a great deal of smoke.

Firefighters were sending large amounts of water into the building to try to control the fire.

Corporate Consumables describes itself as New Zealand's largest locally-owned supplier of office-related equipment and supplies. It employs 60 staff throughout seven branches nationwide and sells more than a million products yearly.

The fire is at one of its three main warehouses.
