An elderly Alexandra woman is terrified after her home was attacked by vandals for the third time in a few weeks, and police are angry that some youths are creating so many problems in the town.

Senior Constable Mike Colligan said the 84-year-old woman, who did not wish to be identified, rang him in tears yesterday morning.

A garden seat had been kicked to pieces, the seat ripped out and the cushion tied up in knots and thrown behind the church across the road.

The woman's section is on a corner and has no fence around it.

Her irrigation system was ripped out of the ground recently and graffiti was scrawled on her windows.

"She is asking, `Why me?" Snr Const Colligan said, describing the vandalism as "sheer wanton destruction".

"People in Alexandra are saying police are too hard on youth.

"We are dealing with this type of crime time and time again.

"This isn't something that elderly or middle-aged people would do, so whom are we to blame?"

Snr Const Colligan was called to another case of vandalism later yesterday afternoon, about three blocks away.

The lawn at a property owned by a middle-aged couple had been dug up with the heels of boots or shoes, and a large chunk dug out of the lawn with a fence paling, which was left stuck into the ground.

Snr Const Colligan said it appeared the paling had been ripped off someone's fence.

He would like to hear from people who had seen anyone acting suspiciously on Saturday night or Sunday morning.
