Police hopeful missing Gisborne man still alive

Police are still hoping to find Gisborne man Simon Eckersley alive, a week after he went missing in a "despondent and confused" state.

Wearing only his pyjama pants and a brown top, the 32-year-old was last seen at 8.30am on Thursday, on the outskirts of the city.

Police were "always hoping for the best" but needed the public's help in finding Mr Eckersley, Sergeant Greg Lexmond said.

An information bus had been set up near the area Mr Eckersley was last seen for members of the public to report possible sightings.

Volunteers and search and rescue personnel yesterday searched an area of bush about 1.5km from where he was last seen.

Mr Eckersley was likely to be nearby given his mental state and the lack of a recent confirmed sighting.

"He was despondent and confused so I wouldn't expect him to get into a vehicle."

Mr Eckersley was described as a medium built Caucasian, about 1.85m tall with blue eyes, short to medium length hair, who spoke with an Australian accent.
