Kakanui man Alec Tasker believes he has the answer to the unsightly mess of silage wrap on farms.

Mr Tasker and his brother Lindsay, of LTL Covers in Matamata, have developed a reusable silage cover which they say is user and environmentally friendly, as well as cost-effective.

"To most farmers, silage wrap is a big problem with what to do with it once it's all ripped and left in a heap or scattered around the countryside," Alec Tasker said.

Over the past few years, the Tasker brothers had developed the cover which has a UV warranty and is long-lasting.

The covers are assembled in portions, for easy measured access to silage and the pieces can then be cleaned, folded and stored for the next season.

Because of the join, they could be used to cover "anything and any size", from palm kernel to fertiliser bins, Mr Tasker said.

The cover was strong, durable and waterproof and cows would not go through it if they stood on it.

Replacement panels were available if needed.

It was on display in the Innovation Centre at the New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek earlier in the year and there was a "big, positive response", Mr Tasker said.
