Many youngsters enjoyed their first experience of theatre when more than 450 adults and children attended the Wizard of Oz live stage show at the Queenstown Memorial Hall.

The hour-long family show was sold out on Friday and about 20 residents had to be turned away at the door, due to fire safety regulations.

Many of those inside came dressed as their favourite characters and sang along with the cast of five, who played 18 characters.

Programme manager Christy Laul said it had been very rewarding to see children enjoy the show.

"The story is a story of hope. Sometimes we think we don't have a brain, or a heart, or courage, so children can learn a lot from the story."

Shakey the Scarecrow said the Wakatipu audience was "fantastic".

"It's lovely to see so many innovative dress-ups; people going to the trouble of making their costumes. It's a family show and it gives them all something to do together."
