Airline pledges repeat service

Air New Zealand has confirmed it will operate its seasonal Dunedin to Brisbane service next year after a strong performance over the winter months.

This year the airline announced it would continue transtasman services from Dunedin to Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, albeit on a seasonal basis.

Air New Zealand Tasman Pacific Airline general manager Glen Sowry said the seasonal Brisbane service, which was due to finish next Saturday, "had performed well over the peak winter months".

"Air New Zealand will operate services to Brisbane again over the winter months next year," Mr Sowry said.

The Brisbane service flies once a week in May and June and then twice a week until mid-October.

Mr Sowry said this summer would be the first time the airline had operated seasonal Dunedin to Sydney-Melbourne flights and "we expect they will perform well".

From December 4 to January 29, the airline will fly to Sydney twice a week, and once a week to Melbourne between December 17 and January 28.

"We will continue to review demand and increase capacity as and when customer demand can support additional capacity."

Mr Sowry said the airline was committed to sustaining and rebuilding its transtasman services in the future.

Dunedin International Airport chief executive John McCall said it was pleasing the airline had committed to more transtasman flights "beyond the end of January . . . even if they are on a seasonal basis".

Mr McCall said the airline's decision not to operate Brisbane services over summer had provided an opportunity for competitor Pacific Blue, which flies from Dunedin to Brisbane three times a week all year.

The airport company was hopeful more services would be added in the future, he said.
