Queenstown Lakes District residents yesterday began using their new wheelie-bin service.

Queenstown Lakes District Council solid waste manager Stefan Borowy said the service was introduced after the community indicated it wanted different options for the district's rubbish collection.

Options now ranged from putting out no rubbish, thereby paying nothing, through to hiring a private 240-litre wheelie bin.

Other options include a smaller and less expensive blue bag (30 litres) and a new 120-litre wheelie bin.

The bins and the new collection truck feature a "50% reduction" target logo on a red lid, and the message to reduce, reuse and recycle on the side.
