Wheelie slow start for bins service

The Queenstown Lakes District Council is disappointed about the uptake of its wheelie bins service which starts today.

Council solid waste manager Stefan Borowy said about 100 residents had signed up for the new service, announced in August.

"It's a little bit less than we had hoped, but we expect it to pick up."

The council hopes to reduce the use of private 240-litre wheelie bins.

The new wheelie bins are available from today at $200 per annum.

Private contractor Northern Southland Transport had agreed to refund remaining months of bin rental for those who chose to make the switch, but director John Frampton said fewer than 50 people had opted to switch.

He said about 3000 residents in the district hired his 240-litre wheelie bins for $347 a year and the council's new service had not made any difference to his rubbish collection.
