Public donations pay protest driver's fines

The delivery driver who brought George St to a halt in a one-man parking protest has had all his fines and court costs paid, after what the woman who collected the money dubbed a "fantastic" response.

Members of the Dunedin public and city retailers donated money, and parking strategy opponent, the Fix owner-operator Mandy Smart, said no more was needed.

Grant Fridd copped $400 in fines and $260 in court costs after a dispute with parking officers that ended in his arrest on September 16.

After being given a ticket for parking on the footpath - and a second when he double-parked - Mr Fridd stationed his truck across the middle of George St, bringing central city traffic to a halt.

With many residents angry about the Dunedin City Council's new parking regime, which the council reversed in part this week, Mr Fridd's actions made him something of a cause celebre.

Mrs Smart promised at the time that business owners would come to his aid, and yesterday she said the response was such that all the fines and costs could be paid.

Both retailers and the public had heeded her call, she said yesterday.

Two collection jars placed in her business had filled quickly and that money, along with donations from businesses, would pay the full amount.

"The response has been fantastic," Mrs Smart said.

Mr Fridd said the money had been dropped into his work yesterday, which was "absolutely marvellous", and he appreciated the help from Mrs Smart and the public.

He was not planning any more action, but "if it helped at all, that's great".
