Potential buyers schooling up on building's potential

If you are one of those highly intellectual people who just cannot get enough of school, then the former Ocean View Primary School may be for you.

The Ministry of Education has put the school's offices, three classrooms - complete with blackboards - and 1.9013ha of property up for sale.

About $410,000 could buy you a tennis court, netball court, enough lawn to play cricket or rugby without breaking windows, plenty of parking space and views of the Brighton coastline, Cutlers real estate agent Hamish McDonald said.

"It still has the bike sheds - there's still lots of things you can use them for."

The school was established in John St in 1959 to pick up the overflow of baby-boomers from Brighton School, which was established in 1870.

The two schools merged in July 2008 and Ocean View was closed due to a continually declining school roll.

Mr McDonald said there had been significant interest in the property since it went on the market last week.

"About 15 people have looked through.

"It's the sort of place people come to look at and their minds just go into overtime looking at the potential of the place."

Some interested buyers had talked about turning the school buildings into apartments, and others had visions of turning them into a large house and using the fields to accommodate pets, he said.
