A 16-year-old Alexandra boy faces charges of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police after a car chase through the town.
The teenager was driving his own vehicle with a friend in the passenger seat about 3.30pm on Friday when police asked him to pull over, Sergeant Ian Kerrisk, of Alexandra, said.
The teenager led police on a short pursuit around an area known as The Pines, endangering young children walking home from school, he said.
Police had tried to stop the vehicle near Dunstan Rd before it was driven past the Molyneux Aquatic Centre, across Centennial Ave and down Boundary Rd before being abandoned on Blackmore Cres.
The pursuit was ended because there was a large number of school children and pedestrians around at the time, Sgt Kerrisk said.
"Our main concern was the risk to pedestrians as school had not long finished for the day.
The driver made no effort to slow down and put himself and a number of young children at risk," he said.
Sgt Kerrisk said after finding the abandoned vehicle police located two teenage males nearby, one of whom was "white and shaking".
"He admitted to being the passenger in the vehicle and was less than impressed with his friend's driving. The 16-year-old was also spoken to and admitted being the driver," he said.
The driver will be dealt with through youth court.
Police released the vehicle to the boy's parents, who had been fully co-operative, Sgt Kerrisk said.
