Two new crossings indicated

A pedestrian crossing with signals and linked footpaths will be created to keep Remarkables Primary School pupils and Frankton residents safe when crossing the busy Kawarau Rd.

Central Otago area manager John Jarvis told the Queenstown Times the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) was refining its design for the $130,000 crossing.

He confirmed the Crown agency's commitment in a meeting with Queenstown Lakes District Council transportation manager Denis Mander last week.

The crossing would be established between McBride and Humphrey Sts.

Traffic lights would default to green when not in use.

Traffic disruption would be minimal while works were carried out, Mr Jarvis said.

A second pedestrian crossing was proposed between Ross St and the Lucas Pl roundabout, to help pupils and residents walk to the Queenstown Events Centre safely.

However, Mr Jarvis said the agency was not committing to that crossing yet and its need would be reviewed once the school was fully operational.

NZTA will also spend $100,000 on widening Kawarau Rd at the McBride St intersection, with new painted left- and right-turn bays.

McBride St leads to Lake Ave and the school site.

Tenders would go out in six to eight weeks, Mr Jarvis said.
