Fortune Theatre stage manager Brendan van den Berg looks forward to taking the theatre's production of A Streetcar Named Desire to the United States for next week's Tennessee Williams Festival.
Fortune Theatre stage manager Brendan van den Berg is hoping for a smooth run through United States customs, especially as his bags will contain a selection of women's dresses.

Mr van den Berg flies to the US on Friday.

In Massachusetts, he will meet director Jef Hall-Flavin and cast members of the Fortune's production of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire.

The Fortune production is one of the featured events in the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Festival, which runs from September 24 to 27.

The opportunity arose through Mr Hall-Flavin, who is festival director and was able to put the Fortune's version of Streetcar, complete with New Zealand accents, before festival curator David Kaplan.

"The Kiwi accent gives a beautiful flow to the piece, and the curator thought it would be a meaningful, intellectual and cultural exchange," Mr van den Berg said.

With the original cast scattered throughout New Zealand and the world, bringing them together has been no mean feat.

The exercise has only been made possible due to funding from within the US.

"We will have to alter some scenes, because we will be missing a couple of minor players, but we will essentially be presenting the whole play."

When Mr van den Berg arrives in Provincetown, complete with costumes and some props, he will launch straight into bringing the American crew up to speed, ready for opening night next Friday.

"It's going to be a wonderful experience. I can't wait to get there."
