A man charged with arson following the fire at Prime Minister John Key's Auckland electorate office has been refused continued name suppression.

Daniel Vale, 31, did not enter a plea when he appeared in Waitakere District Court today.

He is also charged with another arson at Helensville Rugby Club rooms.

Vale's lawyer Nicholas Wintour asked for a bail application to be heard in court on September 18.

He asked for name suppression to continue telling the court his client worked for a voluntary trust and was concerned about the effect it would have on that organisation.

But Judge Lisa Tremewan refused the application.

A small fire broke out when a molotov cocktail was thrown through a window at the Prime Minister's electorate office in Main Road, Kumeu, about 3am on Thursday.

Damaged was restricted to one room.
