A new documentary focusing on New Zealand art dealer Peter McLeavey will be screened ahead of the opening of an exhibition by three of the country's best known photographers on Friday.

The Man In The Hat charts the 40-year career of Mr McLeavey, a dapper Wellington institution, who was an early supporter of artists including Toss Woollaston, Gordon Walters, Colin McCahon and Bill Hammond.

Mr McLeavey opened his two-room dealer gallery at 147 Cuba St in 1968 and he still operates there some 500 exhibitions later.

The 73-minute documentary is narrated by actor Sam Neill, of Queenstown, and directed by Wellington businessman and curator Luit Bieringer.

The film has its Central Otago premiere at Dorothy Browns Cinema, on Friday, at 5pm.

Tickets cost $10 and bookings are recommended.

After the screening, an exhibition of photographs by Ans Westra, of Wellington, Fiona Pardington, of Auckland, and Peter Peryer, of Taranaki, will open at Nadene Milne Gallery.

Gallery manager Leah Seifert said Ms Westra was expected to attend the exhibition.

The show would include works from Ms Westra's documentary series representing her 40-year engagement with Maori culture.

Also in the show will be new works by Ms Pardington, which features letters written by children travelling to New Zealand on board a sailing ship, and new images of birds by Mr Peryer.

"These three prolific senior photographers are at the forefront of New Zealand photography and we are honoured to be showing their works in Arrowtown," Ms Seifert said.

Limited edition photographic prints will be available.

The exhibition runs until October 9.
