A man who was abducted and bashed in Christchurch had the worst facial injuries a professional boxer of more than 30 years had ever seen.
The man, in his 60s, was sitting in his car in the central city about 10.20pm on Tuesday when a woman got into the vehicle and asked to be driven to the parking building on the corner of Madras and Gloucester Streets.
Detective Sergeant Leairne Dow said the woman then let two men into the car and the three of them repeatedly punched, kicked and demanded money from the victim.
The woman then drove the car along Gloucester Street, until the man managed to get out of the car at the Christchurch East School grounds.
Former boxer Peter Warren told The Press he was in his house opposite the school when he heard screams and saw someone being attacked.
"It sounded like a woman was screaming for her life," he told the newspaper.
He rushed outside and saw the man being punched on the ground.
Mr Warren told the attackers to "leave him alone" and they did, leaving the victim with the worst facial injuries he had ever seen.
"He was covered in blood. His face was all bashed in," he said.
"I have had lots of boxing fights all over the world, but I have never seen a face that damaged."
The man suffered a broken nose, cheek and fractured eye socket and would need a plate in his cheek, Ms Dow said.
Police were appealing for witnesses.
