A player development manager will be appointed by the Otago Rugby Football Union to replace the academy manager.

Academy manager Ian Arthur left last month after 11 years in the job, and ORFU chief executive Richard Reid hoped to get a high calibre of applicants.

Applications closed on August 25.

The new role would be similar to the academy manager but Reid said he was not comfortable with the academy name.

The new role would still look after young players coming to Dunedin or going through the Otago system.

Reid said the academy in Dunedin, which was based at Logan Park, had performed satisfactorily but everything could be improved.

There had been criticism of the academy and its inability to produce enough quality players, but that was disputed by Arthur, who said nearly 70% of players who had gone through the academy had gone on to play for Otago.

Players in the academy were put on three-year programmes, and at the end of the third year it was hoped they would be ready to play for Otago in first-class matches.

Arthur left to run a Subway business in the Meridian Mall.

The academy has produced six All Blacks and 28 Super 14 players since it started 12 years ago.

Meanwhile, Reid has confirmed the Otago union no longer has ANZ Bank as a sponsor.

The bank's logo was on the front of the Otago jersey last year but Reid said the bank has ended its sponsorship.

He said the bank had withdrawn from a lot of sponsorships.

It was no surprise to the union and it had budgeted for the loss of sponsorship.

Long-term Otago sponsor Speight's is now on the front of the Otago jersey.
