Dunedin police will launch a CIB investigation after a city bank laid a formal complaint over allegations of fraudulent activities by an employee.

Detective Senior Sergeant Steve McGregor confirmed yesterday "an unnamed [Dunedin] bank has laid a formal complaint with us and a briefing from the bank has arrived".

The complaint was laid on Thursday. Det Snr Sgt McGregor declined to confirm any further details until the investigation formally began next week.

The bank understood to be involved declined to comment yesterday when contacted. A bank spokeswoman replied in a statement to written questions that the bank's "standard policy is not to comment on issues relating to fraud or alleged fraud" and that it had "internal processes and systems in place to address them [fraud allegations]".

The bank made a similar statement when it was first contacted by the ODT two weeks ago, as reported at the time.

It is understood a female employee in the commercial division of the bank has been stood down. Several sources have said the alleged fraud may be in the range of $350,000 to $400,000.
