Skiing at the Remarkables, riding the Shotover Jet and luging at the Skyline Gondola are among the activities to be showcased on national television when top-rated children's programme What Now broadcasts live from Queenstown on August 9.

Presenters Charlie Panapa and Serena Rongonui, and the What Now team, will deliver their trademark fun, mess and mayhem live from Marine Pde and the beach between 8am and 10am.

Families are encouraged to come along any time from 7.30am.

The New Zealand TV institution is inviting children to send in their best potato recipes for its "Spudtacular" competition before the Queenstown show.

Children vote on the What Now website for their favourites and the winning three families will be pre-recorded preparing their dishes and enjoying a host of activities, co-ordinated with Destination Queenstown, on August 7 and 8.

"Brain Freeze" and new games will be played for the cameras and a performance by a Queenstown act was still to be confirmed.

Asked why the resort was selected to be the only location where the programme will broadcast in full outside its Christchurch studio this year, researcher Josh Wolfe said What Now was a family show and Queenstown a great family destination.

What Now sent its roving reporter to the Skyline Gondola in 2006 and Walter Peak Station in 2007, but it has never broadcast an entire programme from the resort, Mr Wolfe said.

"Everyone is welcome to be part of the show and there will be opportunities for children to meet the presenters and get some spot prizes."

• Hot tip – dDub

One of New Zealand's best-loved live acts, dDub, will play three dates in the Queenstown Lakes district in early September.

The Auckland six-piece band will play at Wanaka's Mint Bar on September 3, then at Coronet Peak the next day during the Gay Ski Week International Mardi Gras and wrap up its southern tour at Queenstown's Revolver on September 5.

Lead singer-guitarist Derek Browne told the Queenstown Times yesterday the band "absolutely love" playing in the Southern Lakes and will be staying on for a few days to snowboard and ski.

"We've been going hard in the rehearsal room writing new material and we're looking at recording and releasing a new single and video in the next few months. We're organising summer [gigs] already."
