Two people in a van which collided with a train near Kaikoura in Marlborough today have walked away relatively unscathed.
The two vehicles collided at the Factory Rd level crossing at Hapuku, 12km north of Kaikoura, about 12.45pm.
The crossing was protected by stop signs.
St John ambulance, police and fire went to the scene.
The two people in the van were taken to Kaikoura Hospital with minor to moderate injuries, a St John spokesperson said.
The train driver had been stood down from work and offered counselling as was the standard practice for rail collisions, Kiwirail spokeswoman Ruth Larsen said.
A relief driver was at the scene and the train was expected to get moving again this afternoon, she told NZPA.
The train, which was a two-light engine work train, suffered minor damage in the crash.
