Rotary gives shelter to victims

Rotary New Zealand has responded to the needs of those affected by natural disaster around the world by raising $135,000 over the past two weeks.

The money would help to fund the international Rotary project "ShelterBox" which delivers tough green plastic boxes containing shelter and survival supplies for up to 10 people directly into disaster zones.

Graham Beach, of the Mosgiel Rotary Club and national co-ordinator for ShelterBox, said about 96% of the money raised came from Rotary members, with the rest from public donations.

The money would be used to buy 90 "shelterboxes", which would be distributed as they were needed to any disaster zone around the world from the ShelterBox base in Cornwall, England.

Rotary International had already delivered 1800 shelterboxes to Myanmar and 400 to the earthquake devastated areas of China, he said.

University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic students from Myanmar have organised fund-raising dinners for the victims of Cyclone Nargis.

They will be held at Tandoori Palace in Mornington on Sunday, May 25, and Thursday, May 29, with two sessions on each day from 5pm to 7pm and 7pm to 3pm.

Tickets are $25 and are available from the Otago University Students Association and the Otago Polytechnic Students Association.
