Joe Karam's new book on the David Bain retrial has been delayed and will not be out until next year, HarperCollins Publishers announced today.
Karam, a former All Black turned author and tireless campaigner for Bain, is writing his fourth book on Bain, focusing on the recent retrial.
Bain was acquitted last month of murdering his family in 1994, in a Christchurch High Court retrial.
Karam spent years pushing for a retrial for Bain, whose 1995 conviction for murdering five family members was quashed by the Privy Council in 2007.
HarperCollins said today that during the last three weeks of planning and drafting, Karam and publishers had taken stock of the extensive information still coming to light in the aftermath of the retrial.
The book was due out in September, but publication had now been delayed until next year to allow Karam to fully develop and research further.
HarperCollins publishing manager Lorain Day said the Bain story - in particular the retrial and ongoing repercussions - was an extraordinary one.
It was one that only Karam was qualified to tell, and it deserved maximum time for full analysis.
The resulting book would be bigger and better than originally expected, Ms Day said.
Karam was believed to have spent millions of his own money on legal fees and appeals for Bain.
The new book follows David and Goliath: The Bain Family Murders in 1997; Bain and Beyond in 2000; and Innocent: Seven critical flaws in the wrongful conviction of David Bain in 2001.
