When the Taieri Gorge Railway suburban trains were run for the third time yesterday, they still attracted families and train enthusiasts, especially for the trips to Dunedin's northern suburbs.

The railway ran 12 trips from Dunedin to Mosgiel and Waitati and Port Chalmers and return yesterday, with excited families lining the platforms.

About 1400 people took advantage of the opportunity, with the morning trip to Waitati the most popular, attracting 291 passengers.

The suburban trips were first held last July and again in September.

Taieri Gorge Railway chief executive Murray Bond said while numbers were well down on the first trips in July last year, when 4500 took part, there was still good public demand.

"The novelty has worn off a bit, but people still say they like it and want it to happen again."

Waitati had been included as a destination after the "very good support" from Waitati residents for the train services during the walk-to-work day earlier this year, he said.

A campaigner for more regular suburban train services, Mr Bond acknowledged the "novelty" would disappear if the train services were run daily.

They ran the services in the school holidays to reach break-even levels.

"We'd like to build it up to a more regular service, but we need the support of the regional and city councils to do that," he said.
