A 15-year-old girl died in Northland early today when a tree fell on a caravan in which she was sleeping.
Police said they were told of the incident, which happened at Whakapara, 23km northwest of Whangarei, at 12.50am.
No one else was in the caravan at the time.
The young woman's death happened during a storm which has been lashing the northern part of the North Island during the weekend.
The MetService said heavy rain and damaging winds were forecast to affect areas from Northland to Waikato and across to Bay of Plenty and Gisborne over the weekend.
